THANKS FOR TUNING OUR WAY!

Monday, November 30th, 2009

Thanks to all that attended last nights mandatory meeting of the ‘Quality Talk Radio Club’.

I realize the shows topic was probably a bit demanding for many, an example being one listener who has become a former listener rather than hear a take on Religion and God that was quite questioning, and irreverent to put it most mildly, but it was a prime example of what I like to do. Rest assured, we shall revisit the topic in the future, assuming we have much of a future.

I had a good time and enjoyed the listening family input which was sadly too minimal for my liking.

I do want the show to be more interactive, but with the audience numbers stagnant, it seems unlikely. Any ideas as to how we can ‘grow’ the audience would be most appreciated. I lack the time to promote and prepare a show.

For now, our every other week Extravagonzo will be the norm. However, the response and audience size must increase. I know less shows from yours truly can only negatively impact such growth, but the prep and production time is minimally worth my while if were not hitting more people with the product.

By later this day, the stream of the show should be up, and a downloadable copy in the archive for IPOD loading and the like. At almost 4 hours, it is one of our longer efforts to date, and may be best absorbed via download in bite sized doses.

We encourage you to grab it, and tell a few hundred friends what they are missing. With so much chatter in the media about the dearth of interesting, entertaining and relevant talk radio, especially on weekends, more must know that we provide the antidote to by rote boring radio.

Brother Dave (The Boogie Man) will be in the air chair next week with a very special program featuring his power pop plus blend of music that needs more airplay, and gets it here at 11L/RNI. As always your attendance is mandatory. See you on the radio pally!

Pardoned White House Turkey Slays Nine

Friday, November 27th, 2009

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) - In a potentially embarrassing situation for the Obama White House, a turkey pardoned by President Obama earlier this week went on a three-state killing spree on Thanksgiving Day, killing nine.

While authorities were still piecing together the motivation behind the recidivist fowl’s homicidal rampage, a chorus of Republican critics complained that pardoning the feathered killer was symptomatic of the Obama administration’s misguided policies.

“First they close down Guantanamo, then they let killer turkeys run free,” said House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH). “Next thing you know they’ll put this turkey on trial in New York.”

Inspired By Oprah, Homeless Guy Ends 25 Years of Shouting at passerbys

Sunday, November 22nd, 2009

NEW YORK (The Borowitz Report) - A homeless man who began shouting at New Yorkers in 1985 said that Oprah Winfrey was the inspiration behind his decision to call it quits in early 2010.“I’ve had a good run,” said Tracy Klugian, who has barked non sequiturs at passersby on the corner of Third Avenue and 29th Street for the past 25 years. “If there’s one thing Oprah’s taught me, it’s quit while you’re on top.”

Mr. Klugian said he was exploring a number of options, including starting his own cable channel and shouting obscenities at people on the subway.

Detainees Moved to DMV; Could Be Held There ‘Indefinitely’

Thursday, November 19th, 2009

WASHINGTON (The Borowitz Report) - In a plan that would solve the thorny problem of where to transfer the detainees currently held at Guantanamo, Attorney General Eric Holder said today that the enemy combatants would be transferred immediately to a Department of Motor Vehicles office in Manhattan.

While Mr. Holder did not indicate how long the detainees might be held there, he did say that the DMV “is capable of detaining them indefinitely.”

But the Attorney General’s plan may have already hit a roadblock as human rights organizations have howled in protest at the move.

“Detaining prisoners at the Department of Motor Vehicles, especially in Manhattan, is a clear violation of the Geneva Conventions,” said a spokesperson for Amnesty International.

A BRIEF BUT MIGHTY SHOW

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

…Is how I’d describe our last Extravagonzo. A downloadable copy should be available later this evening as I’ve been a tad busy and doing my web work on the road. If you missed it, get it! Definitely worth the wait in my never humble opinion!

Independents Abandoning Sinking Democratic Ship

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

Independent voters who put Barack Obama into office in 2008 may cost him the Presidency in 2012 and take other Democrats down with him.

Recent polls show independents are jumping off the Good Ship Democrat. Gallup says only 14 percent of independent approve of the job the Democratic-controlled Congress is doing, a new low for the year.

Other polls show Democratic incumbents trailing Republicans among independents. Some of the margins are double digit.

For Obama, the numbers are equally bad. CBS polling shows the President’s approval rating among independents falling to 45 percent — a 10-point drop since April.

“We withdrew from the accounts of voters and now we need to pay them back,” Nathan Daschle, executive director of the Democratic Governors Association, tells Politico. “We are having these conversations right now about what independents need to see and hear.”

——————————————————————————————————-
I’ll tell you what they want to see and hear. The guy they voted for, the ‘changemeister’ who has delivered on few of his promises. They want him to stand behind those things he pledged to change.

To date, Obama has shown little to convince me he is all that different from every other corporately owned and operated president of America. So long as president milquetoast continues his flip flopping, foot dragging, wishy washy, political meandering, he will continue to lose support, especially that of those who only voted for him in hope that he would be different, or just liked the prospect of tearing down the color wall.

Stow any excuses about it being ‘too early’ in his term to get anything done. It is a proven political fact that with time, the intransigent democrats and the hardly cooperative Republicans are not likely to deviate from their opposition to certain programs, indeed the longer he is in office, the less likely he is to reform anything, or perish the thought, get a substantive health care plan done that includes a PUBLIC OPTION.

Excuse me while I go remind myself once again, just why I hate most of our elected officials, elected to do our bidding, although they rarely do, and why it is long past time to scrap the two party farce that insults we the people as a matter of course.

US, China in Race to Pollute Water on Moon

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

No deposit, No return

BEIJING (The Borowitz Report) - Hours after scientists confirmed finding evidence of water on the moon, the United States and China each announced ambitious plans to become the first nation to pollute the moon’s water.

Both space programs argued that there were more than bragging rights at stake, with China and the U.S. both vying for the coveted title of biggest polluter in the universe.

“Our mission is simple: get a rocket up there, dump some PCBs in the moon’s water, and then return safely to Earth,” NASA said in an official statement today.

For its part, China indicated that it would take a different approach: “We hope to pollute the moon’s water with run-off from a lead toy factory.”

Afghaniscam

Wednesday, November 18th, 2009

by Tom Engelhardt

It’s now a commonplace of the Afghan War. Western leaders in London, Berlin, Amsterdam, and Washington, as well as on flying visits to Kabul or even Kandahar, excoriate Afghan President Hamid Karzai for the “corruption” of his government. In return for their ongoing support, they repeatedly demand that he take significant action to “step up efforts to root out crime and corruption,” that he, in fact, “arrest and prosecute corrupt officials.”

Can there be any question that there is a plethora of corrupt officials to arrest? The president’s brother, Ahmed Wali Karzai, reportedly on the CIA payroll, is also, as it’s politely put in the press, a “suspected player in the country’s booming illegal opium trade.” Ahmad Rateb Popal, the president’s cousin and another figure long linked to the drug trade, runs a local security company protecting American supply convoys that, according to Aram Roston of the Nation magazine, is involved in an industry-wide protection scam, using American Army money to pay off the Taliban not to attack. In addition, American arms and ammunition are clearly ending up in Taliban hands. The recent presidential election was a spectacle of fraud; the Afghan Army, despite years of training, may hardly exist (as Ann Jones reported  for this site in September); the ill-paid, ill-trained Afghan police are known to operate on the principle of corruption; and a surprisingly small percentage of foreign reconstruction funds actually makes it out of the pockets of big private contractors and western specialists, as well as security firms, and into Afghan hands.

And then, of course, there’s Kabul’s “Obama market.” (In the period when the Soviets ruled Kabul, it was the “Brezhnev market” in honor of the Russian leader, and decades later the “Bush market.”) This “notorious bazaar” is “full of chow and supplies bought or stolen from the vast U.S. military bases,” according to Jay Price of the McClatchy newspapers, who calls the name “a modest counterweight to [Obama’s] Nobel Peace Prize.” His description includes the following: “One shop offered an expensive military-issue sleeping bag, tactical goggles like those used by U.S. troops and a stack of plastic footlockers, including one stenciled ‘Campbell G Co. 10th Mtn Div.’ Another had a sophisticated ‘red-dot’ optical rifle sight of a kind often used by soldiers and contractors.”

In other words, from the American, European, and Japanese reconstruction boondoggle to the presidential palace, from the U.S. and Afghan military to street-level, the country is a klepto-state. As number 179, it misses by only one place taking the rock-bottom spot in Transparency International’s latest global corruption index. Of course, what else could be expected in a situation in which the nation’s main source of funds is either narcotics — the country now accounts for a staggering 92% of global opium production — or foreign aid? To demand that President Karzai takes “steps” to “root out crime and corruption” is, under the circumstances, an absurdity, no matter how many special task forces to investigate graft he forms under Western pressure. It’s like asking him — to mix metaphors — either to put a gun to his head or drink the sea. Consider it a measure of Afghan realities today that you can hardly read a piece about the country in the Western press without the word “corruption” lurking somewhere in it, and yet the reporting on how that system of corruption actually works has generally been thin indeed.

If you want a peek at such a system in action, though, check out, Pratap Chatterjee’s recent piece from Kabul at TomDispatch, “Paying Off the Warlords.”  It offers a rare inside look at how a pervasive system of nepotism and corruption — involving the country’s old “warlords” from the days of the post-Soviet civil war and its new corporate “reconstruction” raiders — actually works.  Make no mistake, this is not a system amenable to “reform”.
